Bring in the Berries

Posted on: March 2, 2018

Freshly picked berries provide a low-calorie, nutritional punch of vitamin C, minerals, and antioxidants. Often sweet and sometimes sour, a berry is a small, plump, juicy fruit. Berries come in an array of colors and adored kinds like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries. In recent years, other fruits like goji berries and acai berries have grown in popularity for antioxidants and potential cancer-fighting properties. Most berries are available in stores year round, but farmer’s markets fill up with freshly picked berries at different times of year in certain regions. For example, northern folks pick bountiful baskets of strawberries in June, but Floridians celebrate their strawberry harvest in March with a Strawberry Festival, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees enjoying, music, entertainment, and delights like Strawberry Shortcake topped with fresh whip cream. It’s important to note that seasonal berries are highly perishable. If you don’t have time to rinse and quickly prepare fresh berries, it may be more convenient for you to stock up on frozen berries. Fresh or frozen, they make an excellent addition to any smoothie. Dried fruit is also a simple way to get your fix of beneficial berry nutrition when on the run.
