Packing Tips for Weekend Trips
It’s finally here – that three-day weekend getaway you’ve been waiting for all year. You’re ready to enjoy a carefree time, and the last thing you need is something weighing you down. We’ve created a quick list of tips for ensuring you keep your luggage light.
- Plan an Itinerary: Once you know your plans and schedules, you can figure out exactly what to pack. For example, don’t bring a fancy dress or heels if you don’t plan any formal events.
- Note any Necessities: After you’ve determined your needs for the itinerary, you can make a list of travel necessities, including toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, deodorant, etc.), medications, clothing, and shoes. Only pack what is needed for each activity on your planned itinerary.
- Choose Light Luggage: Opt for a bag or suitcase that is easy to carry and will fit conveniently overhead or tossed in a backseat. Your back will thank you. Picking a smaller bag from the beginning will also help ensure you don’t over pack things you don’t need.
- Condense Clothing: Frequent travelers know there is an art to packing. One of the best tips is to roll clothing instead of folding. This can save precious space and reduce wrinkles. Also, use every bit of precious space, such as stuffing your socks or small items into any packed shoes.
- Conserve and Reuse: Consider wearing the same outfit on both to-and-from days of travel. Trust us – no one will care you’ve repeated an ensemble. If possible, also wear your heaviest items or bulky accessories during your to-and-from travel days, such as boots or a hat, to save packing space and avoid extra baggage fees.
- Follow the 3-1-1 Rule: Even if you are not traveling by air, it can save you space to always follow TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule, which limits you to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, or creams in sizes 3.4 ounces or less. Smaller, travel-size containers are an obvious solution for packing light.
- Limit Accessories: Finally, only consider items that will be vital for your trip. Do you really need your laptop when a smartphone or a hotel business center could address any work emergency? And forget that flat-iron if you’ll be spending most of your time in the pool. Packing smart is the key to packing light.
We hope these seven minimalistic reminders will help you think and pack like an expert traveler. Whether you’re flying off to a weekend in New York City, or you’re driving to a countryside bed-and-breakfast, you will certainly be light on your feet and poised for a great weekend of adventures, food tastings, relaxation, and new sights.
