Historic Trips from North to South

Posted on: June 30, 2017

Summer rekindles warm feelings dating back to childhood. Many of us treasure our memories of playing outside with friends, family vacations, and viewing fantastic firework displays to celebrate America. With each sparkler we light, the patriotic love for our great country ignites. It should come as no surprise that tourist traffic at American landmarks increases during the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July. If you are craving a summer adventure or family vacation immersed in American history, here are some ideas for planning a trip.

Witness American Democracy
There is a countless number of places to consider for a historic visit. Search the web to find a wide array of options from sea to shining sea. At the top of most must-see historic lists is Washington, D.C., where you can tour the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, as well as observe bustling activity at our Capitol Building.

Go back to beginning of it all at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, where the original Pilgrims landed and tourists still flock. While in the region, visit the historic city of Boston to tour an array of Revolutionary landmarks, museums, as well as the first-ever public library.

Step into American History

Reading the historical significance of a place in a book simply cannot compare to visiting the actual location. For example, walking through the grassy fields at Gettysburg National Battlefield in Pennsylvania, touring the area museums, and seeing actual Civil War artifacts will leave a permanent imprint on your brain.
Gettysburg’s haunting history attracts even the most academic history buffs, but the tourist-friendly town also provides ample entertainment for all ages. You can step back in time to enjoy Civil War time-period meals served in historically themed restaurants. Also, while in Pennsylvania, be sure to head over to Philadelphia to visit the notoriously cracked Liberty Bell and peruse Independence Hall, where our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.

Sightsee the South
The south is full of historical sights to see. Visit destinations like Savanah, Georgia or Charleston, South Carolina for a glimpse into a society of long ago, with sprawling plantations, historic forts, and American monuments dating back to the 1800s. If you can handle the heat, visit historical attractions in New Orleans, Louisiana, where you can enjoy a spicy Cajun meal on Bourbon Street, tour the French Quarters, and immerse yourself in the truly diverse history of our great nation.

We also encourage you to visit historic places off the beaten path. Call local chambers and research hotel-package options for pre-arranged historic tours in a city near year.
