Breadfruit Boost
If you are looking for a fresh way to get your daily dose of nutrition, then put breadfruit on your grocery list. This exotic tree plant is foreign to many Americans, but it is well known in the state of Hawaii.
Originating in the South Pacific, breadfruit is said to have been brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians. A species of the mulberry family, breadfruit is packed with Potassium and Vitamin C. Its nutritional makeup has many considering this low-fat, carb-rich, tropical staple food to be the next superfood. What’s also super is that some experts believe the quick-growing breadfruit could be a solution to world hunger, as the fruit can be eaten at all stages of growth in a variety of ways. When it’s small, it has an artichoke-like flavor.
Once ripe, the starchy consistency of breadfruit is quite similar to a potato or baked bread, hence the name. Also, like a potato, it is enjoyed baked, steamed, pan-fried, boiled, or roasted. We simply suggest you avoid overcooking to avoid any mushy texture. The peel and seeds are edible, but many recipes call for peeling in a similar way you peel potatoes. Try breadfruit to transform a boring meal into a worldly and nutritious dish.
